Firsts- first date, first kiss, first job, etc.
Songs - not only the words and melody, but also what was happening when I heard that song.
Events- weddings, births, graduations, anniversaries, etc.
---- and the list goes on and on, but how about this one?
DRESSES! Yes, dresses! I'm sure you gals can relate. Isn't there at least one dress in your closet that takes you back down memory lane? Of course there is!
Well, awhile back I woke up from a vivid, endearing, colorful dream. In that dream were a few dresses that had made an impressionable impact on my life. So, before I forget, let me walk down memory lane and share a few of those lovely beauties with you.
- The elegant, flowing blue chiffon. Oh yeah--this was a beaut! Even though I was only five at the time, I still remember this one! It was my Grandma and Grandpa Holtz's 50th wedding anniversary and a friend of my Aunt Midge had a daughter who had just outgrown this fancy "party" dress. Oh my goodness! As the queen of hand-me-downs, this one was the bomb! I must say, I felt like I was at least 10 that day as I twirled and twirled and twirled around in that church basement. It had the perfect full skirt to balloon the perfect twirl. Yes- the blue chiffon - my first "dress" memory and I've gotta say- I was beautiful!

- The chic, classy "tent" dress. Yes, I said "tent" dress! How can I describe this dress to you? Hmmm-- two words-- no waistline! Yeah! It fit you like a tent! The "tent" dress was a hit in the late 60's and my talented Grandma Nielsen spent hours at her sewing machine, so lovingly creating "tent" dresses for me and my female Nielsen cousins. All nine of us got them one year for Christmas. Mine was a sleeveless, dark brown- gold stripe plaid. I embellished mine with a gold turtleneck and I really don't want to rub it it in, but as I remember, mine was the prettiest!!
- The ever so lovely, stylish, lacey, bell sleeved pretty in pink dress. I will never ever forget this dress or the moment I first saw it! I can still see my mom and I drooling at this pink dress in the window at Mode O'Day in Council Bluffs. With a closet full of hand-me-downs, imagine my surprise when we actually went in to try it on! And, get this, the only one in my size was -- IN THE WINDOW! Oh my excitement was over the top! Not only did I get a "NEW" dress but it was the one "IN THE WINDOW!" Needless to say, this was my Sunday School dress until I could no longer squeeze myself into it!

- The mint green, classy, "oo--la-la" lacey, organza yoke dress. Again, a hand-me-down from my cousin, Lavonna, I wore this dress to my eighth grade graduation. I can still remember standing on those bleachers, singing "Climb Every Mountain", looking and feeling like Nancy Sinatra in my beautiful, mint green dress with my lovely, golden locks piled high to the sky!
- And of course, who could forget their wedding dress? How can one dress make you feel so beautiful? This dress made me feel like the homecoming queen, Cinderella and Marilyn Monroe all wrapped into one. I chuckle today as I watch "Say Yes to the Dress". Oh the quandary these brides-to-be go thru now a days! So very, very different for me back in 1977. I actually found my dress in "Modern Bride" magazine and went to Brandeis at the Crossroads on my noon hour and ordered the dress! Yep! No hours of trying on and taking off or tears of indecision. The moment I saw that dress, I knew it was mine! And today--- 35 years later I still think I couldn't have selected anything more beautiful!
